FALL: The Siddur: A User’s Guide
The prayerbook can look like a random collection of recitations, songs, Torah excerpts, and declarations with neither rhyme nor reason. But in fact, it is brilliantly and thoughtfully constructed with a hidden geography. In this class we will make sense of the structure of the siddur and study in-depth the key prayers and blessings that we Jews have been reciting for millennia, with a look at the changes various branches of Judaism have chosen to make.(Oct. 26, Nov. 2, 9, 16, 30, Dec. 7, 14, Jan. 4, 11, 18.)
WINTER: Neither Root Nor Branch
Judaism and Christianity are often compared to a “root and branch”. But does this simile hold up under scrutiny? We’ll trace the transformation of the Jewish Nazarite sect into a Hellenistic Gentile faith and try to construct a more accurate and useful comparison of these two related, yet profoundly different religions.(Jan. 25, Feb. 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, March 14, 21, 28, April 4.)
SPRING: K’tuvim
The third section of the Bible, K’tuvim (Writings), is a marvelous collection of diverse texts: moral exhortation, an apocalyptic prediction of the End of Days, a grim treatise on the meaninglessness of life, erotica, lament, praise, and some history, too.
